Most of garlic’s health benefits are caused by Allicin, which is formed when a garlic clove is split – either chopped, crushed, or chewed… and it is only briefly present in fresh garlic after it’s been cut or crushed, so this is why fresh garlic is the best way to get the amazing health benefits.
We are lucky enough to have a small farm on Loamy River Soil, which has been farmed Organically and Biodynamically for over 20 years. The soil is very fertile, and free draining. We use only natural plant nutrition and beneficial controls to maintain soil health, and in turn to strengthen the plants and nutritional content. These are intrinsic parts of Biodynamic Farming.
Biodynamics is a low tech way of gardening – connecting with the land, the soil, and the natural Lunar and Cosmic rhythms. Aiming to be as self sufficient as possible, and using different systems on the farm together, in harmony. Plants, herbs, animal manure and organs are used to cure and strengthen other plants. We have been using Biodynamics methods ourselves, and the past owner of this land also used these methods, and he noticed an immense positive change in the topsoil and the soil fertility.
Our farm is only 1.5 acres, and we tend it mostly by hand as this has less impact on the soil. We plant by hand, and Organic and Biodynamic preparations and feeds are applied by hand Sprayer, so we are in constant contact with the crop and it’s needs. Again we harvest by hand and store for a full 5 weeks to allow the garlic to cure well for longer storage. And sell locally or send direct to you anywhere in NZ 🙂
